Korie Lynn's 1995 Health Diary

{}

02/07/95 Bordetella.
02/22/95 Blood work to be sure vaginal discharge is normal. White count is okay which indicates no infection. Discharge is probably hormonal induced. Tube of Dermalone to put on scratch on side of head.
03/08/95 Heartworm check and began Heartgard.
06/01/95 - 9:45 P.M. Korie's first seizure, urinated and released anals, involuntary movement of all legs - paddling, foaming at the mouth. Wobbly for a time afterwards. Called Dr. Scott Carpenter, DVM (Dr. Scott).
06/02/95 Suspect she had a seizure during the day because her crate has urine in it.
06/02/95 - 10:30 P.M. Seizure number three which was like the one described on 06/01/95.
06/03/95 - 3:00 A.M. Seizure number four which followed the same pattern as the previous three.
06/04/95 - 12:00 P.M. Appointment with Dr. Scott for blood work. Complete blood count and blood chemistry profile was performed.
Blood work results are back on 06/05/95 and check out okay. We will treat this as one seizure and won't worry about it unless it happens again.
06/15/95 Second heat cycle (5 months 15 days between first and second cycle).
06/28/95 1st Lyme Vax - Borrelia Burgdorferi Bacterin - Fort Dodge Laboratories, Inc. - Fort Dodge, Iowa 50501 - serial number 140137a - exp. 12/05/96.
07/06/95 Took in for diarrhea and not eating. Checked out okay. Confirmed she was out of season by Dr. Scott with smear. Gave injection and supply of Metronidazole and ID dog food.
07/10/95 1 year old shots, rabies, bordetella and check up. Picked up supply of Metronidazole to take to SSCA National just in case we need it.
07/23/95 2nd Lyme Vax.
08/07/95 Took in for diarrhea and not eating - throwing up yellow bile. Comments: Took in stool sample on Aaron and Himel also - all showed a touch of something from the SSCA National but boys are better. Gave Korie injection and supply of Metronidazole and ID dog food. Dr. Scott feels she never fully recovered from 07/06/95 incident.
08/07/95 - 11:45 P.M. This seizure did not last long, no foaming, no urination but did release anal glands.
08/08/95 Spent day with Dr. Scott for observation and complete blood work. Dr. Scott felt it was a reaction to the Metronidazole (for diarrhea) which is known to bring on seizures in seizure-sensitive dogs. Discontinue use and give Amforel instead.
08/10/95 - 6:30 P.M. We just came home from dinner out - Korie greeted us at the bedroom door and went into a seizure. Urinated, no anals, foaming, leg movement, dazed afterwards for 5 minutes.
08/11/95 - 8:20 A.M. Talked to Dr. Scott regarding the blood work he had done on 08/08/95. It looked fantastic; better than the last time. He still thinks it is the medication getting out of her system. She is going to be seizure-sensitive and we will have to deal with it. If she has any more seizures after this weekend, we may want to consult a neurologist.
08/16/95 - 9:30 P.M. Seizure - yipped first like she was having a dream; legs moved more like a dream. Foamed at mouth and urinated but no release of anals. Tried to wipe her mouth of the foam before she was completely out of the seizure and she was snappy.
08/17/95 -08/18/95 Suspect there may have been a seizure on either 08/17/95 or 08/18/95 because there was urine in her crate when I cleaned out crates.
08/18/95 Put Korie on 30 mg. of Phenobarbital (PB) every 12 hours.
08/27/95 - 10:30 P.M. This seizure was different. She was laying on the kitchen floor on her side. She tightened up her whole body and raised up off the floor. This lasted the usual amount of time with foaming at mouth but no urination or anals released. Korie barked at the end. Did not take long to come out of it. She was VERY active today with Mom and Dad being here for a visit until 08/29/95.
08/28/95 - 3:30 A.M. Korie slept in her crate and had one in there. It was typical of ones before. Foamed at mouth, urinated, released anals. After it was over, she sat up and did not want to come out of her crate.
08/28/95 - 4:30 P.M. Korie was again laying on the kitchen floor. This was like the 08/27/95 seizure in that she tightened up all over and raised off the floor before leg movement began. Dr. Scott called a second after she went into this seizure. Dr. Scott has been talking to specialists about Korie and they think it is congenital idiopathic epilepsy*. Seizures are probably triggered by estrogen level and it is recommended to spay her. Dr. Scott referred us to the Neurological Center for Animals - Dr. Patricia Luttgen - Diplomate, ACVIM, Neurology (Dr. Patti) if we want more extensive tests performed. Korie was very disoriented after this seizure and tried to go outside and knocked into the sliding glass door twice. Did not observe full seizure but she did foam and urinate. I knew she was going to have one, her eyes were rolled way back just before it began, seeing only the whites of her eyes.

*congenital - existing at birth; idiopathic - disease whose cause is unknown or uncertain; epilepsy - a nervous disorder characterized by recurring attacks of motor, sensory, or psychic malfunction with or without unconsciousness or convulsive movements.

08/28/95 - 8:00 P.M. Korie was on our bed and we were in the dining room having dinner. When she came down I thought she may have had a seizure because she seemed disoriented. The bed was wet with urine.
08/29/95 I swear Korie does not know her name today; she is watching fans move, looking at herself in the mirror, smelling all over the house like she has never been here before. She is also squealing and occasionally yodels. 4 P.M. we had a visit with Dr. Patti which included neurological exam, physical and review of Korie's history. (Mom and Dad left this morning.) Korie ate dinner very well and we increased her PB to 60 mg. every 12 hours (from 30 mg.).
08/30/95 Less squealing in morning and none by evening when I got home. Only ate 1/2 of breakfast but did eat all of dinner. She is going to her favorite place in the yard to look through the fence and responds to her name and commands. She was able to catch toys and food. Korie is moving around some but seems to prefer to lay around and watch. She was standing up at the kitchen counter checking out things and knew where the cookie jar was when asked about it.
08/31/95 No squealing at all this morning. Around 1 A.M. everyone went outside to potty but Korie just laid on the bed. Slept comfortably on bed with us all night. Seemed a bit annoyed that she didn't get morning cookie when put in her crate. Went to Dr. Patti's at 3:30 P.M. for 7 P.M. MRI and spinal tap. Picked up at 8:15 P.M. - MRI's do not show anything (perfectly normal). Results of spinal tap should be back by 09/01/95 in the afternoon. Korie is very " drunk " and out of it. Gave PB before bed but didn't feed.
09/01/95 Korie had a pretty good nights sleep but is still " drunk " this morning. Did eat breakfast, drank water, going outside potty and barking at the joggers. Gave her PB this A.M. Responding well to name and things around her.

Roy called Dr. Patti around 6 P.M. She said we can conclude that it is primary inherited epilepsy and recommends spaying. Roy said she was doing very well and playing.

09/02/95 Told everyone at the dog show - this was a very difficult weekend.
09/04/95 Took Korie to the CKC show which she enjoyed. Groomed her there.
09/05/95 Called first thing in the morning to make an appointment for Korie to be spayed.
09/06/95 Korie is spayed.
10/13/95 Added Potassium Bromide (KBr) therapy to PB. First day is " loading dose " and we are to expect her to be tired and out of it. No reaction like that was observed. Give .7 cc with evening meal in addition to the PB in A.M. and P.M.
