Korie Lynn's 1996 Health Diary

{}

02/04/96 - 1:27 A.M. Seizure which lasted about 10 to 15 seconds. This was not as violent as the ones in August 1995.
02/11/96 - 3:30 P.M. Short seizure. Pups were taking a nap with Kathi. Korie fell off the bed and really foamed at the mouth. This lasted about 30 seconds.
02/12/96 - 5:17 A.M. This seizure lasted a second or two but she was very disoriented afterwards and had trouble walking at first as if the rear was not functioning correctly.
02/12/96 - 1:24 P.M. We laid down for a nap. Korie acted very uneasy. . . she was looking around the room and her eyes were real big. She did the tight arch up off the floor like she was screaming and fell back down. This lasted approximately 30 seconds but she was very disoriented afterwards; she kept jumping around the bedroom and running into the closet mirrors.
02/12/96 - 5:30 P.M. Took Korie to Dr. Scott's to do PB level test.

Results came back that she is on the lower end of dosage for her weight so we have room to increase if we need to. Dr. Scott is still very happy with her progress; we are to follow any seizure with PB to stop the chance of cluster seizures. If anything is increased in the future, it will be the KBr but at this time we are to keep everything as is. We are to call Dr. Scott with seizure activity.

03/15/96 - 3:30 P.M. Came home from work and everyone was barking except Korie. I'm not sure when seizure started because she was laying on her side and jerking when I got to her crate. She foamed and urinated. This lasted approximately 1 minute or a little less. When I opened the crate door her eyes were real big, she stumbled out and was very disoriented. Once she was able to climb the stairs I let her up to the family room. Aaron was waiting at the door and this startled her - she fell backwards all the way down the stairs. Gave PB 30 minutes after the seizure. She seemed pretty much back to normal in 1 hour after the seizure but not 100%.
03/16/96 - 1:16 A.M. This seizure lasted less than 1 minute. She released her anals and urinated but did not foam. The thing that was different is that she just laid there afterwards for another minute or so. When she did get up she was very disoriented. Gave PB 10 minutes after the seizure.
03/16/96 - 5:23 A.M. This seizure lasted about 1 1/4 minutes but was different. . . she only jerked on one side of her body. Released anals and urinated a little. Then she just laid there and her mouth filled with foam (like a washing machine). Continued to lay there for about 2 minutes before trying to get up. She was still staggering at 5:35 A.M. when we tried to get some more rest. Did not give PB because she would be getting one with breakfast in a few hours. When we did get up, approximately 9 A.M., Korie was 100% back to her old self!
03/20/96 - 4:30 P.M. Took Korie to Dr. Scott to check PB level plus check level of KBr in blood.

Results came back on 03/29/96. The PB level is fine but the KBr level is 60% below normal. On Saturday, 03/30/96 we gave her 3 load doses of 1.5 cc KBr each time. Her new dosage will be 1.5 cc once per day; up from .7 cc.

05/08/96 - 4:45 P.M. Took Korie to Dr. Scott to check PB level plus check level of KBr in blood.

Results came back on 05/16/96 and everything was perfect. Dr. Scott felt if Korie was going to have any seizures it would be this coming weekend (05/18/96) due to stress of visitors at the house and rescue dog.

05/23/96 - 3:30 P.M. Came home to Korie not barking. Let everyone else out and she was stumbling around her crate. Kept her downstairs until she was a little more with it. Gave her a bath because she had urinated in her crate. We suspect she had seizured.
05/23/96 - 4:00 P.M. I was in the kitchen and saw her in the middle of a seizure outside in the gravel area. Went outside with her and she was very disoriented.
05/23/96 - 4:15 P.M. Another seizure in the kitchen. She did urinate and moved all over the floor.
05/23/96 - 4:30 P.M. Seizure lasted 1 minute and 40 seconds; she did not urinate. Korie wanted to sleep on the basement floor. I picked her up and put her in the crate upstairs so I could watch her. She slept most of the evening but did eat dinner good with all proper medications. Called Dr. Scott (he is out of town; office will try to reach him). Called Dr. Patti (she is out of town; tech suggested taking her to ER).
05/23/96 - 9:45 P.M. Korie was laying on couch and had another seizure. All seizures seem to be lasting close to 2 minutes.
05/23/96 - 10:20 P.M. We were sleeping and she had another seizure. She seems to be biting at the air more through these. Followed the seizure with a PB.
05/24/96 - 3:03 A.M. This was an interesting seizure because she looked like she was going to stop and then started biting at the air and went back into another. She was in her wire crate and bumped around in there afterward. Roy let her out and just held her. Finally got her settled down to go back to sleep around 3:20 A.M. She wanted to sleep out on the bed and snuggled all night. First thing in the morning she seemed like her old self; ate breakfast fine and had medications. By the time I left for work she was pacing and not looking real good.
05/24/96 - 8:10 A.M. Talked to Dr. Scott's office. He probably tried to call last night when our phone was busy around 8:30 P.M. Dr. Scott wants us to follow each seizure with a PB.
05/24/96 - 12:00 P.M. Ran home at lunch to check on Korie. She probably has had a seizure because there was saliva in the bottom of her crate; her whiskers are a mess. Took her outside by herself and she stayed real close to me. I brought her in to let others out and she started with another seizure. This was a very very violent one. It lasted almost 7 minutes. Very disoriented afterwards. She got next to the wine rack and hooked her mouth around the shelf. Gave her a PB about 10 minutes later and she bit me. Let her out by herself and she pottied. She does not have a clue what is going on and is not coming out - does not seem to be responding to the PB (I wonder how many she will have to have before she stops?!?) She drank lots of water and ate the cookie I put in her crate when I left. I'm not sure running home at lunch was such a good idea. I am exhausted over all this - will she come back?

Talked to a friend who recommended Dr. Teague and Dr. Jonas at Wheatridge Animal Hospital if we need an emergency clinic.

05/24/96 - 4:46 P.M. 1 minute seizure and not as violent as the one at noon today.
05/24/96 - 4:55 P.M. 6 minute seizure. Gave PB after seizure instead of waiting until 5:15 P.M. for dosage with dinner.
05/24/96 - 6:55 P.M. 3 1/2 minute seizure. First part real quick and a short break then started back in. Gave PB.
Dr. Scott had just called and wants the PB increased to 90 mg. in A.M. and P.M. and to follow up each seizure with PB - he wants her drugged until he gets home.
05/24/96 - 7:04 P.M. 30 second seizure.
05/24/96 - 7:34 P.M. 2 minute seizure; Korie was sleeping and it woke her up.
05/24/96 - 7:50 P.M. 1 1/2 minute seizure.
Called Wheatridge Animal Hospital just as this one happened and talked to Dr. James Akers (Dr. Jamie). He said that we have a clinical emergency and requested us to bring Korie into them.
05/24/96 - 8:10 P.M. 2 minute seizure.
We loaded Korie into the van (still in her crate) and went to the clinic. We could not get her out when we arrived so carried the crate in. Dr. Jamie examined her and she checked out good. They will keep her overnight and we are to call at 9 A.M. to see how she did and also take her medication to them.
Notes from Wheatridge Animal Hospital medical records:
05/25/96 - 12:43 A.M. 1 minute 45 second seizure.
05/25/96 - 1:42 A.M. 7 minute seizure - gave 5 mg. valium IV and tech notified Dr. Jamie.
05/25/96 - 4:33 A.M. 5 minute 15 second seizure - gave 5 mg. valium IV to control.
05/25/96 - 6:23 A.M. 1 minute 15 second seizure.
05/25/96 - 6:40 A.M. 5 minute seizure - gave 5 mg. valium IV to control.
05/25/96 - 6:48 A.M. 3 minute 30 second seizure with light seizure activity.
05/25/96 - 9:40 A.M. 40 second seizure - gave 5 mg. valium IV; did not let it run it's course.
05/25/96 - 10:30 A.M. We took Korie's medication down to the hospital and got to spend some time with her; they told us to stay as long as we wanted. We discussed moving her to another facility for the night or Roy picking her up (we decided it would be better to bring her home because they did not have 24 hour weekend coverage). We fed her and administered her KBr. She ate well but is still really out of it.
05/25/96 - 11:10 A.M. 40 second " chewing fit " seizure.
05/25/96 - 11:20 A.M. 40 second seizure.
05/25/96 - 11:30 A.M. 40 second seizure.
05/25/96 - 11:45 A.M. 20 to 30 second seizure.
05/25/96 - 11:55 A.M. 20 to 30 second seizure.
05/25/96 - 12:25 P.M. 45 second seizure.
05/25/96 - 12:35 P.M. 15 second seizure - called Korie's name and it seemed to stop right away.
05/25/96 - 1:00 P.M. 1 minute seizure.

End Wheatridge Animal Hospital notes.

05/25/96 - 5:20 P.M. Roy got home with Korie. She is totally disoriented and scared! Her tail is plastered to her bottom. Roy was shown how to administer valium if a seizure is 3 minutes or more.
05/25/96 - 5:50 P.M. 30 second seizure. Roy was outside with Korie and held her so she wouldn't fall over. Front legs were stiff and she chomped at the mouth and some foam.
05/25/96 - 6:10 P.M. Gave her 90 mg. of PB and she ate her dinner well. Resting at 6:15 P.M.
05/25/96 - 7:12 P.M. 30 second seizure.
05/25/96 - 8:15 P.M. Had a bowel movement and seems a little more active.
05/26/96 - 10:00 A.M. Roy took Korie back to Wheatridge Animal Hospital for the day for observation. No seizure activity.
05/26/96 - 5:00 P.M. Roy picked up Korie again and got valium just in case it is needed.
05/27/96 - 10:00 A.M. Roy took Korie back to Wheatridge Animal Hospital to have catheter removed. She did not have to stay.
05/28/96 - 7:00 A.M. Called Dr. Scott. He would like to have Korie all day for observation and will talk to Dr. Patti.
05/28/96 - 4:30 P.M. Picked Korie up and talked to Dr. Scott. Dr. Patti is pleased Korie finally came out although she was not pleased that all this happened. Dr. Patti wanted PB raised to 90 mg. indefinitely (from 60 mg.) and see what happens. She also suggested adding Clorazepate (15 mg.) in the A.M. and P.M. This is an oral valium and may cause her to be drowsy.
05/30/96 - 3:30 P.M. Korie did not urinate in her crate today. She is back to her old self - 100% !!!!! Welcome home Korie Lynn!
06/26/96 Took Korie to Dr. Scott to check PB level.

Results came back on 06/28/96 as "25" - therapeutic range. (The therapeutic range is 15 - 45.)

07/04/96 - 5:56 A.M. Korie had a seizure which lasted about 1 minute. Did not seem as violent as past ones. We kept calling her name throughout. No foaming or release of anals. Recovery was immediate.
07/04/96 - 6:10 A.M. Korie had a 15 second seizure. Roy was handing her the meatball sandwich (her morning medication) and she did not take it. It was because her mouth was open and chomping, a little foam. Did not fall to ground and she continued to be coordinated and recovered immediately.
07/04/96 - 6:20 A.M. 3 minute seizure. Korie had just finished her breakfast and was wandering around in the dining room. Dropped to floor. Much more violent with movement all over body and chomping of jaws. Laid there for a minute then up and about - ran into sliding glass door. Seems to be recovered and is taking food gently.
07/04/96 - 4:43 P.M. 2 minute seizure. Kathi had just laid down for a nap at 4:30 P.M. with Korie and she started in. Usual movement all over. Laid very still afterwards. She still seems to be recovering faster.
07/04/96 - 5:20 P.M. 3 minute seizure. Still trying to nap and she went into a much longer and more violent seizure. Foamed at mouth and released anals. We fed dinner and gave medication at 6 P.M. Not coming out of this very easily. After dinner she laid in back yard on grass and slept a good hour. Very groggy for rest of evening preferring to lay on bed in front of fan (temperature was near 100 degrees today - some fireworks but they did not seem to bother her).
07/05/96 - 4:10 A.M. Korie had a 4 minute seizure. Back to usual type with release of anals, foaming, movement all over. She did not seem too out of it and came back to bed after going outside to potty. At 6:10 A.M. she got up and was back to her old self. Had breakfast and medication at 6:15 A.M.
07/05/96 - 8:00 A.M. Korie spent the day at Dr. Scott's for observation. Received annual shots and rabies vaccination while there. (I will pick her up on my way home from work.)
07/05/96 - 10:25 A.M. 30 second seizure while at Dr. Scott's. Mostly chomping and foaming.
07/05/96 - 10:30 A.M. 15 second seizure while at Dr. Scott's. Same as above but came right out of this one.
07/05/96 - 5:03 P.M. 4 minute seizure - this was quite severe. Korie was at the top of the stairs and then just laid there afterwards. When she tried to get up she almost went through the stair railings.
07/05/96 - 5:20 P.M. 3 minute seizure with usual foaming and paddling. These last two seizures have left her not 100% again. She is afraid of noises and a bit stand-offish. Will take her when we go away tomorrow (Saturday).
07/07/96 Korie is back again - 100%. . . God how I hate epilepsy!!!
09/27/96 Took Korie to Dr. Scott to check PB level plus check level of KBr in blood.
Results came back on 10/08/96 - okay!
